Let’s be real. We all obsess over something. Maybe a TV show. Perhaps a book. A snack. Some obsessions we can understand. Others just don’t seem to make too much sense, at least to us. Here are nine irrational obsessions only Pennsylvanians can fully appreciate. See what else you might add to the list.

  1. Two words: potato chips.

Flickr/Like_the_Grand_Canyon Really, can you consider Pennsylvania’s obsession with potato chips irrational? We do, after all, live in a state known for making some pretty delicious chips. Utz. Herr’s. Martin’s Potato Chips. And, Herr’s. Which is your favorite?

  1. One more: Phil.

Flickr/Shannon Ramos Phil’s just about the cutest groundhog ever, wouldn’t you agree? So, it’s really no surprise, that the whole state’s attention turns to Punxsutawney every Groundhog Day. But, it goes so much further than that. Stroll around the town to find restaurants that pay tribute to Phil. There are also the countless Phantastic Phils, six foot high Phil statues placed throughout the town.

  1. Celebrating the start of deer hunting season.

Flickr/Andrew Malone Most people just don’t get it. The start of deer hunting season is kind of (and that’s an understatement) a big deal in PA. In fact, kids get off of school. Some people take off of work. It’s an unofficial holiday only Pennsylvanians can truly appreciate.

  1. Driving in the left lane.

Flickr/CGP Grey Ahem. Virtual hands up if you either drive in the left lane or get incredibly frustrated with drivers who don’t use it as a passing lane?

  1. Wearing flip flops all year around.

Flickr/Betsy We’re a tough bunch in PA. A little snow isn’t going to stop us from sporting shorts. Or, even wearing flip flops. Sometimes we’ll wear flip flops in the dead of winter. Dressing for summer all year around an obsession? Perhaps only in PA.

  1. Philly cheesesteaks.

Flickr/karmacamilleeon How can one not be obsessed with Philly cheesesteaks? They’re delicious. Hearty. Perfect for a meal or a for snack. Where do you get your favorite Philly cheesesteak?

  1. Wawa and Sheetz.

Flickr/William F. Yurasko Others may judge it as irrational. But, obsessing over Wawa and/or Sheetz just makes good sense when you live in PA. After all, where else can you fill up your tank and grab a quick bite to eat in only a few minutes?

  1. Saving our parking spaces.

Flickr/camera_obscura Shoveling snow is hard work. And, let’s face it, we deserve our parking space after we spent backbreaking time digging our car out from the snow. Yes, we may be obsessed with saving our space. Respect the chair that marks our space and all will be well.

  1. Rushing to the store at the mention of snow.

Flickr/Bart You fall into one of two categories with this one. You either rush to the store for bread, milk, and toilet paper at the mere mention of the S word. Or, you roll your eyes at those who do. For those who do, it’s really not all that irrational to want to have the basics if we’re about to get snowed in, is it?
