Everyone knows Arizona doesn’t exactly have a great reputation for summer weather. Make one mistake during a summer hike and you could die on the trail. But winter? You might want to avoid coming here during that season too because we know you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Not convinced? Let’s take a look at a few reasons coming to Arizona in winter isn’t such a good idea.
- First of all, winter in Arizona looks awful.
Tomas Carrillo/Flickr What is this? I mean, isn’t February supposed to make it look all snowy, icy, and dead? Who needs wildflowers and blooming trees?
- And the state can’t make up its mind about snow.
Julius Whittington/Flickr Wait, didn’t we just see a snow-less area? What gives?
- Arizona has a ridiculous amount of sunshine in winter.
CEBImagery/Flickr Winter is supposed to be cloudy and dark, right? That’s not the case here so you’ll have to search for your moody winter day elsewhere.
- You might find yourself wearing shorts in the middle of our winter.
Julochka/Flickr Ugh, no one should have to wear those this time of year.
- You’ll find yourself asking, “where’s the ice and snow?”
Brian Dunnette/Flickr No scraping ice off the windshield, no shoveling snow. How are you going to get in your daily workout now?
- Oh wait, you’ll still have that experience in some areas.
Deborah Lee Soltesz/Flickr Just kidding! You still need to work out your back with all that shoveling. But maybe just a little less than, say, Wisconsin. Also, not so much this year.
- You won’t have any excuses to not go for a morning run or a weekend hike.
Rickz/Flickr When the high is in the 60s and a cool breeze is blowing, you’ll be wondering why on earth you’re in Arizona. Seriously, why?
- When it does snow, most Arizonans tend to freak out and do some rather embarrassing things.
Lisa Jacobs/Flickr Okay, maybe the folks living in mountainous and high elevation areas might have an idea how to drive in snow but when those desert dwellers see the tiniest snow spot sitting in the shade? Those are the ones who will try to build a snowman with the muddy stuff.
- You’ll probably be harassed by wildlife.
Glenn Seplak/Flickr Hoping for an animal-free weekend during your hike? Sorry to tell you but javelina, coyotes, migratory birds, and other wildlife are up and around this time of year.
What are some other reasons people should just completely avoid traveling to our state in the winter?
