Each city across our country has its own defining characteristics that make it special. Louisville is no exception and, in fact, these defining traits are what make our city one of the best. It may seem weird to outsiders (and even those in other parts of Kentucky), but you’ll often see local Louisville residents doing these 7 things and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
- Obsess over college basketball.
Flickr/jpellgen Dare we mention this topic right now? Since we’re talking Louisville, we pretty much have to. Our city is slightly obsessed with our Cardinals and college basketball in general. It may be a roller coaster ride cheering on the University of Louisville, but it sure keeps life exciting.
- Maintain Louisville’s small town feel.
Flickr/Louisville Images Louisville may be the largest city in Kentucky, but locals know that it still has plenty of small town charm. This includes feeling like you know everyone and feeling your world getting that much smaller when you meet someone new and instantly discover a connection.
- If it has to do with bourbon, we’re in.
Facebook/Jim Beam Urban Stillhouse Sure, not everyone in Louisville loves bourbon, but the vast majority enjoy drinking it, learning about it, and talking about it. Our city is famous for it, and to us, bourbon is like fine wine and should be treated with the same respect.
- We think there’s more to the Kentucky Derby than the horse race.
Flickr/Rob Briscoe If Louisville is known for one thing, it’s the Kentucky Derby. Most locals are on board with this tradition and try to make the best of the crowds and hoopla. The city celebrates for several days leading up to the race with festivities, fireworks, and parties. There are even other races that we enjoy watching more than the Derby itself.
- We don’t handle winter well.
Flickr/Zepfanman.com Maybe it’s because we are technically a southern state? We get snow almost every year, yet each time it happens, we still tend to race to the store for the essentials. A dusting of snow? Goodbye bread, eggs, and milk.
- We’re proud to be a unique spot in Kentucky.
Facebook/The Highlands of Louisville, KY Louisville locals are definitely Kentucky proud, but they’re even more Louisville proud. The city tends to be a bit of a bubble when compared to the rest of the state. Overall, it’s more liberal and open to change, yet still holds onto its history and charm.
- Enjoy the best of both southern and midwestern states.
Facebook/Belle of Louisville Riverboats Louisville is located in a southern state, but just barely. Cross the Ohio River and you’ll be in the midwest, so Louisville claims characteristics of both. In short, we are charmingly southern and laid back midwestern. It’s a perfect combination.
Louisville has character, heart, and plenty of diversity that makes it unique and a great place to live. Call us weird, but we love it. What do you think of our list? Anything you would add? Let us know in the comments!
