If you were born in North Carolina or have been lucky enough to live in the Tarheel State at some point, then you know that there are certain foods that have become an integral part of our everyday lives. You’ll find most of these foods and drinks at restaurants around the state and in people’s kitchens, but travel over state lines and you might have a hard time finding them elsewhere.
- Hamburger All-The-Way
Flickr Earls37a A hamburger in The Tarheel State isn’t your average burger, most North Carolinians order their hamburgers all-the-way, which can mean a lot of different things depending on what part of the state you’re in. Basically it means we like a lot of toppings on our burgers like chili, mustard, onions and cole slaw. The messier the better! Order a burger all-the-way in another state and they’ll look at you like you’re speaking another language.
- Krispy Kreme
Flickr Thomas Hawk What’s better than seeing the Krispy Kreme hot light on? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. And you won’t find a better glazed doughnut than from this Carolina staple. We love them so much we even have an annual 5K dedicated to Krispy Kreme.
- Cheerwine
Flickr Lorianne DiSabato Ahhh the refreshing taste of fizzy cherry soda. Everyone in North Carolina is familiar with the Carolina-born drink Cheerwine, but people in other states often confuse it for actual wine. If you move somewhere else you’ll more than likely have to have the bubbly goodness shipped to you, because you can’t find it in many other states outside of the South. How sad is that?!
- NC Barbecue
Flickr Edsel Little Bringing up which state has the best barbecue will cause a fight just about anywhere you go, but whether you like it pulled or chopped, all Carolinians know that both our Eastern-style barbecue and Lexington-style blow other states out of the water.
- Bojangles
Flickr Mr. Blue MauMau It’s Bo TIME! Leave the state for an extended amount of time and you’ll start to miss those spicy chicken biscuits — guaranteed! Spicy not you’re thing? Then the popular supremes will be calling your name.
- Liver mush
Flickr mswine Most people outside of North Carolina don’t even know what liver mush is — so good luck actually finding it at a store somewhere else.
