Sometimes you’ve decided to move away for a while, but you don’t always get to forget your state entirely. For some of us, there’s always something that reminds us of our roots. Whether it’s a familiar smell or the sight of your favorite sports team, you’re bound to feel a little homesick. These 13 things will always make us Kansans think of home, no matter what.

  1. Seeing those colors together

Bradjward/Flickr Whether you’re a fan of purple and silver, blue and red, or red and gold, you’ll feel homesick just seeing those colors together out and about.

  1. The passing smell of a cow trailer

Bradley Gordon/Flickr Odds are you’ve had one pass you or drive in front of you for a stretch of time. If you traveled a lot as a kid, like me, you’re pretty familiar with this particular scent coming through your vents.

  1. That small town Kansas feeling

Dylan Edwards/Flickr Nothing’s more comforting than entering a small town here and feeling right at home. That’s just not something you can find anywhere!

  1. Our Kansas winds

Garry Knight/Flickr When it comes to windy places, Kansas is first on our minds. However, it might feel off-putting to have windless days in other states. You could actually trust your hair-do to stay in place!

  1. Long stretches of Kansas back roads

Ike60/Flickr Driving down one of these with dirt flying up behind you is such a freeing feeling. Plus, it’s the best way to enjoy our scenery!

  1. Construction on a road

Joe Gullo/Flickr Here in Kansas, there’s plenty of areas that have been under construction for a long time. Especially places like Wichita.

  1. Our delicious food

mswine/Flickr Can you imagine going somewhere where no one had heard of bierocks? How do they live?

  1. Our (in)famous weather

Niccolo Ubalducci/Flickr Everything from snow in March to tornadoes everywhere makes you think of our state. Even if the snow is more like slush anyways…

  1. Our amazing sunsets

Patrick Emerson/Flickr Every sunset here is packed with color, and it helps that we’re so good at photographing them. At least our cameras get good use!

  1. The sound a field of wheat in the wind makes

Travis D/Flickr It’s like being near the seaside without any of the water. I’d say it’s the most soothing sound you could hear in the state.

  1. Wide open skies and seeing for miles

Patrick Emerson/Flickr The sight of the horizon fading into blue is just amazing, and paired with seeing clouds coming for miles isn’t a treat you can find anywhere. Seeing something like this is something many Kansans take for granted.

  1. The call of our bird

USFWS Mountain-Prairie/Flickr The western meadowlark has a distinct call, and if you’ve ever lived near them, you’ll recognize it’s absence when you leave.

  1. Our rolling hills

Vincent Parsons/Flickr Watching low hills as far as you can see might make you homesick too, especially if the hills seem to go down, rather than up. It’s an apt description for the hills that cover some of our Eastern side.

In addition to these, check out some of the weirdest things that have ever happened here in Kansas!
