I’ve read the comments, so I know some of y’all aren’t super happy with the idea that the Natural State has been discovered by tourists. There is good reason for folks to flock here, as the Natural State is hands down the prettiest state in the union. However, if you’re feeling like with fall coming up we should try to warn people away so we can keep all the scenic drives and state parks empty for ourselves, these 13 reasons why exploring the outdoors in Arkansas is the worst idea is a list you’ll definitely want to share with all your tourist friends.

  1. We don’t really have enough lakes.

Flickr/Jonathan Ball Sure, there are 2,340 named lakes and reservoirs in the Natural State, but we could use a few more.

  1. The sunsets are just awful.

Flickr/Jonathan Ball Ugh. My eyes are tired just thinking about the sun setting over the Natural State. There are entirely too many colors in those sunsets, and they’re always making a spectacle of themselves.

  1. The Ozarks have far too many scenic spots.

Flickr/Texas Tongs Seriously, why do they have to be one of the last wild places in the central United States? Why, oh why, do there have to be 1.2 million acres of forest, gorgeous overlooks, and so many things to do there?

  1. The Ouachitas have far too much appeal.

  1. You can never really find a good place to take a scenic drive.

Flickr/MRHSFan It’s a shame we don’t have, say, among the most state-designated scenic drives in the U.S.

  1. Arkansas is lousy with incredible trails.

Flickr/Dave Thomas There are so many trails in Arkansas that it’s hard to choose which to take.

  1. The wetlands of the Delta are totally for the birds.

Flickr/Dave Thomas You could just sit around all day and look at birds, because so many birds live there.

  1. Our waterfalls are so showy.

Flickr/David Nichols I mean, get over yourself, Hemmed-In-Hollow Falls, it’s not like you’re the tallest waterfall between Appalachia and the Rockies. Oh, you are? Okay.

  1. The Arkansas Grand Canyon is entirely too grand.

Flickr/Noel Pennington You have to do so much work to see it, too. To get a really great view…you have to…pull over on the side of the road…and get out of your car.

  1. Hawksbill Crag is just a big rock.

Tripadvisor/MrsLittleSkaterKid If it weren’t suspended over a gorgeous valley with such an expansive view, it wouldn’t be nearly so breathtaking.

  1. Arkansas’s rivers are way too interesting.

Flickr/Buffalo Outdoor Center There are so many of them, and they have such important histories. And you can float on them.

  1. There definitely aren’t enough forests in the Natural State.

Flickr/Marco Becerra Only just over half our land here is covered with forest, so there are only 18.4 million acres of forest in Arkansas.

  1. Fall is not at all the best time to visit, as we definitely don’t have the best fall color in the United States.
