If you’ve been outside of Maine, you’ve no doubt been asked a lot of questions about where you’re from. From confusion over the weather we’ve chosen to live with to the way we speak, it seems the rest of the country has quite a few questions about life in Vacationland. Good thing we love to talk about Maine! Here are some of the funniest questions it seems the rest of America has for us.

  1. Do you eat lobster at every meal?

joeshlabotnik / Flickr Most of us don’t, but we might if we had the opportunity. The rest of the country might not realize that, unfortunately, living in Maine doesn’t give us free access to lobsters.

  1. Is Maine basically Canada?

auvet / Flickr Nope. It’s basically the United States, though we do have a lovely border that allows us the ability to visit Canada.

  1. Is there even anything to do in the winter?

pavdw / Flickr Sure! We ski, we snowshoe, we go cross country skiing and we spend full days inside one of these hoping for smelts!

  1. Are moose totally adorable?

librarygeek / Flickr This question is often preceded by, “have you ever seen a moose?” Moose might be cute from far away, but they’re actually pretty gosh darn dangerous if you see one on the road. So, we mostly just try to steer clear. Literally.

  1. Doesn’t the guy from that show come from Maine?

Steve Bennett / Flickr Yep! Patrick Dempsey grew up in Lewiston and still does a lot to support the community! Lewiston is where The Dempsey Challenge takes place. This is a non-competitive race where participants are challenged to cycle, run or walk to raise funds in support of The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing.

  1. Do you have anything else to do outdoors aside from the coast we always see?

waynesphotos / Flickr Yes! Some people forget about the beauty of inland Maine, but these areas are unrivaled! The way the fog falls on the farms and the sunsets over the low trees makes us love inland Maine just as much as the coast.

  1. What the heck is that weird drink?

joeshlabotnik / Flickr It’s Maine’s most famous drink! Once used medicinally, it’s now synonymous with the old days in Maine. Although, you can find it in just about any grocery store here.

  1. Why all the plaid flannel?

chiotsrun / Flickr Because it looks this good in the snow!

  1. Are you all so excited when the snow finally melts and you can drive safely again?

b k / Flickr Have you ever heard of mud season? Most of us are actually pretty glad when the snow covers up all the pot holes and ditches in the roads from the rain and ice of last year.

  1. Do you get to miss work all the time for snow?

schwar / Flickr No way! Snow just means a more annoying commute. If we look outside and see this, we set the alarm and know we’re waking up for work.

  1. What is a bean supper?

lunaspin / Flickr That’s easy! It’s when all our moms get together to hear about the things we’ve done wrong in school for the past 6 months. Most kids dread bean suppers!

  1. Are you speaking English?

pavdw / Flickr Yes. It’s just a special kind of English that includes dropping our “r” sounds and agreeing with a simple “ayuh!”

…although, sometimes we’re not speaking English.

coreytempleton / Flickr Because we’re speaking French! Our proximity to French speaking parts of Canada has meant that entire towns in Maine speak mainly in French.

  1. Where would you move if you could live anywhere?

Leslie Stormes / Flickr Um, nowhere? We’re already IN the best place in the country!

No matter how you choose to answer these questions, be sure not to reveal these Maine secret spots! They’re the best!
