There’s a lot to love about living in Mississippi, which means there’s a lot to miss if you ever leave. And just like the old saying, “You don’t know what you have until it’s gone,” you won’t realize all the little things there are to miss until you actually leave. Not so sure? Here are 12 thoughts that are sure to cross the minds of homesick Mississippians. Read on to see how many can you relate to.
- “I can’t find Duke’s anywhere!”
Andrew Filer/Flickr If there were an official mayonnaise of the South, it’d probably be Duke’s. The creamy creation goes perfectly on everything from ‘mater sandwiches to BLTs, so the idea of living without it is absolutely terrifying for any Mississippian.
- “Nowhere around here offers monogramming.”
Rudy Janchan/Flickr Monogramming is a great way to add a charming touch to just about anything – from tea towels to handbags. It’s so popular, in fact, that many stores in the South offer the option onsite; however, head up North and you’ll quickly realize this is more of a southern thing.
- “What ever happened to small talk?”
Brrrr! It’s Cold Here!/Flickr We Mississippians tend to move at a slower pace, giving ourselves time to enjoy the small things in life – like small talk. Head to a bigger city, and you’ll quickly realize that people don’t have time for manners, let alone chatting with a stranger.
- “I miss small town life.”
Picture Mississippi - photography by Kim Hunt/Facebook Sure, big cities are great, but there’s nothing quite like a charming small town. From quaint Main Streets and friendly residents to incredible scenery and loads of history, small towns are truly one-of-a-kind.
- “I can’t believe they don’t tailgate.”
Ken Lund/Flickr Tailgating is HUGE here in Mississippi and around the South. In other places? Not so much. Even those who think they know how to tailgate – don’t. To make it crystal clear, nobody tailgates like the South.
- “Maybe the weather wasn’t so bad.”
Matt Chan/Flickr Sure, Mississippi humidity is brutal, but moving away could mean facing freezing temperatures and blankets of snow.
- “Maybe I do have an accent.”
JoshBerglund19/Flickr You might not think you have an accent, but as soon as you open your mouth in a new place, you’ll realize that you do.
- “I can’t believe the gas stations don’t serve lunch.”
Kim/Flickr Here in Mississippi, gas stations serve everything from delicious fried chicken to mouthwatering barbecue – something that is (sadly) not the norm all over the country.
- “How am I supposed to enjoy breakfast without grits?!”
Sara Ackerman/Flickr Next to biscuits and gravy, grits are vital to an authentic southern breakfast. Sadly, you’ll have to do without if you head north of the Mason Dixon line, where grits are (gulp) non-existent.
- “I can’t believe they don’t serve sweet tea!”
PJ R/Flickr Let’s face it; nothing can compare to an ice cold glass of (really) sweet tea.
- “I wish I could find some real barbecue.”
Jimmy Smith/Flickr From fall-off-the-bone ribs to heavenly pulled pork sandwiches, there’s no place like Mississippi when it comes to savory BBQ.
- “I miss driving on back roads.”
Luke/Flickr There’s nothing like a quiet, scenic drive through rural Mississippi – something you’ll definitely miss if you head to a city and have to deal with bumper to bumper traffic on a daily basis.
