There are times when our identity is formed as much by the things we won’t do as by our actions themselves. Bostonians are a wonderfully varied bunch, but living here is a unique experience that has an effect on our collective behavior. Here are 12 things that most Bostonians have never done:
- Rooted for the Yankees.
Flickr/Dex(07) No way. No how.
- Polluted chowder with tomatoes.
Flickr/stu_spivack We use tomatoes in loads of dishes, but there are rules. True Bostonians know that chowder is supposed to be pale - not orange or reddish.
- Got Sweet Caroline out of your head after someone starts singing it.
Flickr/ElizaC3 This song only became an official part of Fenway tradition in 2002 but it’s seriously catchy.
- Stayed out at a Boston bar until 3:00 a.m.
Flickr/Matt Hintsa Bars and clubs here close “early” compared to some other U.S. cities.
- Panicked at the sight of a rotary.
Flickr/Bossi It doesn’t matter if you call it a rotary, roundabout or traffic circle, we are confident in our ability to master them. Figuring out which lane we need to be in for a desired destination can be a little trickier.
- Obeyed all the traffic rules.
Flickr/Wally Gobetz Seriously, there are just so many of them. Whoever devised driving laws clearly never tried to negotiate Boston’s roads.
- Complained that Boston isn’t big enough.
Flickr/Bert Kaufmann Boston’s not too big or too small. It’s just right.
- Called it Beantown.
Flickr/Drew Dies Leave that to tourists who are trying to blend in.
- Attempted to drive a moving van along Storrow Drive.
Flickr/Ernest McGray, Jr. Out-of-state students… just don’t. No one wants to be Storrowed.
- Appreciated other people’s attempts at a Boston accent.
Flickr/Rich Renomeron Regardless of whether or not we have a traditional accent, people’s impressions of the Boston accent usually fall flat.
- Thought there were too many Dunkin’ Donuts.
Flickr/Eric Kilby We can literally never have enough Dunks.
- Moved away for good.
Flickr/teofilo Life can pull us in unexpected directions, but true Bostonians eventually return home.
Have you done any of these things? Let us know in the comments. No fibbing!
