Franklin has been voted as one of the best small towns in the United States, but the once small and secluded spot has turned into its own metropolis. Still, walking downtown makes us feel like we’re wandering through history and experiencing a past we’ll never be able to recreate. We put together a couple of neat things for you to do if you’re in downtown Franklin or the surrounding area in the coming months. This is truly a weekend trip you could experience over and over again.

Spanning a 16-block area, historic downtown Franklin is great for a brisk walk and a coffee shop. Pop into one of the high end shops along the strip, like White’s Mercantile or Anthropologie or one of the small town boutiques that dot the roadway.

The holiday season is absolutely stunning in Franklin, boasting weekend festivals and events throughout the months of November and December.

Franklin is nothing if not known for its Civil War history. The Carnton Plantation is home to the largest Confederate cemetery in the United States, and stands on the site of the historic Battle of Franklin. You can also visit the Lotz house, just as pivotal during the period and located just down the road.

You can start off with a freshly brewed cup of coffee and a breakfast pastry, then follow it up with a hefty omelet, fried up quick and fresh. This fabulous little spot is located just off the main road in downtown Franklin, at 110 4th Ave S.

Franklin sits snug in the heart of Middle Tennessee, and this sweet space is great for long hikes on the Natchez Trace or simply a meandering drive out to Leipers Fork. There are quite a few bed and breakfasts tucked back in the hills as well, so you might try to make a reservation and spend your entire trip surrounded by greenery.

The Franklin Theatre promotes both live and filmed shows, which means you can join for a low-key acoustic night or pitch up for an new showing of an old classic like “Pretty Woman” or “It’s a Wonderful Life” during the holiday season. You’ll feel as if you stepped back in time in the best way. Tickets are cheap, but make sure to buy ahead of time! Seats are reserved, and you don’t want to end up craning your neck in the front row.

This Williamson County distillery prides itself on small batch whiskey and a heart rooted in southern Tennessee tradition. It makes for a great visit, and a little bit of bourbon is never a bad thing to bring home. You can visit at 3381 Southall Road in Leipers Fork.

High Brow Coffee + Tea is great for a quick afternoon pick-me-up, especially if you’re looking for something sweet! It boasts a gorgeous, rustic interior design that’s perfect for a date or afternoon out with kids.

This gorgeous retail and entertainment complex is full of local artisans and great spots to eat. We’d recommend visiting during the weekend, when the local farmers market is set up out back.
