All sorts of stereotypes about Kansas City are going to come to the surface over the years, whether we want them to or not. Those of us who have lived here for a while know that most aren’t really true, but sometimes you have to double check. Here’s 11 stereotypes that aren’t really true, but we’ll laugh at them either way.
- We’re just another smelly big city.
brent flanders/Flickr Look at those clouds and that clear blue sky! That doesn’t look like smog to me!
- The only thing to do here is go to Worlds of Fun.
Charlie Hallin/Flickr Honestly, some of us would rather it not be here at all.
- All we eat is barbecue.
jpellgen/Flickr If that’s true, how do we have so many great places to get Italian food?
- Our downtown is just like any other.
formulanone/Flickr Is your city the City of Fountains? Didn’t think so.
- We aren’t very nice.
Andy Morffew/Flickr For some reason, a lot of people think that living in the city makes you rude or less welcoming to others.
- All we care about is sports.
brent flanders/Flickr There are some of us who would tailgate every day if we could, but for the most part, we’re not all about sports all the time.
- We don’t like spending time outside.
M&K Huber/Flickr If that’s true, then why do we have the giant Swope Park, numerous hiking areas, and cool activities like ziplines all around us?
- There’s not a lot of history here.
jpellgen/Flickr If you haven’t heard of Bleeding Kansas or visited our many museums, you’re really missing out on some important history lessons.
- We’re all just farmers pretending to be city folk.
Tim Samoff/Flickr Many forget that while we may have started off as a cowtown, we definitely haven’t ended that way!
- Drivers from (state) side are the worst!
Thomanication/Flickr One side thinks Missouri’s to blame, and the other will blame Kansans. Can’t we accept that every city has terrible drivers?
- Our weather is crazy.
brent flanders/Flickr To be fair, we’re exaggerating when we say there’s snow and tornadoes in the same day. Does anyone even remember a time when that happened in the same area?
