Sometimes stereotypes turn out to be more true than not.
In Kansas, we’re known for fields of wheat, flat prairie, and really boring highway drives. We have some beef with a neighboring state or two, but only because of sporting rivalries. We’re half farmers, half city folk, and all hospitality. We’re just us! Let’s see how many true stereotypes you match up with. Do you know of any others?
- We have a lot of farmland.
One Day Closer/Flickr It’s not all farmland, but it’s… a majority of Kansas. If we’re being honest.
- For the most part, we’re a pretty flat state.
Gary Rich/Flickr Not as flat as Florida, though. So that’s something, right?
- We’ve got a lot of bad drivers when it’s raining hard or snowing.
David DeHetre/Flickr We like to criticize other states, but we’re not the best drivers either.
- Many of us actually have a slightly southern accent.
Kevin Buehler/Flickr Some of us sound like Okies, some sound like Northerners, you get the point.
- We’ve got a lot of beef with our neighboring states, depending on which sport you follow.
john sloan/Flickr It seems like everyone needs someone to compete with, no matter what.
- Many of us do actually live near a field of wheat or corn.
Brian McGuirk/Flickr Unless you’re in the middle of Wichita or Lawrence, you’re probably not far from a field.
- Eastern and Western Kansans are two different types of people.
Bernard Spragg. NZ/Flickr The divide isn’t down the center, either. It’s more of a slanted line West of Wichita.
- We’re kind of drama queens when it comes to our winters.
Vincent Parsons/Flickr It really doesn’t even snow that often, we’re just worried about ice storms.
- Or weather in general, honestly.
David DeHetre/Flickr Tornadoes are hard to catch, even if we do have them pretty often. Plus, it’s never as crazy as we make it sound.
- We really don’t know when or if we will finish roadwork.
Bernard Spragg. NZ/Flickr This one’s completely true. Deadlines always seem to move farther away, no matter how quick it was supposed to be.
- Long distance driving on our major highways does suck.
Doug Kerr/Flickr It’s flat, boring, with almost no features. If there’s no clouds, you better like the color blue! You won’t be seeing much else for miles.
After this list of fun Kansas quirks, why not take a guided tour to some abandoned cellars?
