There are some things that New Orleanians just need to have. Some of these things may make living here a lot easier, some may just be things that make New Orleans what it is. All of them are things New Orleanians just can’t live without. How many of the following can you totally relate to?
- Flip Flops
Rebecca Schley/Flickr For better or worse, we can pretty much get by year round with a good pair of flip flops, minus maybe a handful of random days during winter when you swap them out for a pair of boots.
- Go cups
TheKarenD/Flickr So you can always take the party with you.
- Tabasco
SnippyHollow/Flickr It’s the preferred hot sauce in the Crescent City, and it goes on just about everything.
- Zapp’s
Tigrilla Gardenia/Flickr They’re absolutely delicious and the perfect accompaniment to any po’boy.
- Brass Bands
Theodore Lee/Flickr Is there anything better than hearing that beautiful brass music echoing down the streets?
- Festivals
Matt Deavenport/Flickr New Orleanians will throw a festival for just about anything, and now that we are in prime festival season, get ready to have your weekends booked until Mardi Gras.
- Wildlife
Laura Pontiggia/Flickr Egrets, pelicans, blue herons, and alligators are so prevalent you may overlook them, but they’re certainly special to our city.
- Food
Vic C./Yelp Jambalaya, red beans and rice, gumbo, beignets, the list could go on and on. Our cuisine is unique and delicious and we just couldn’t live without it.
- Crawfish Boils
Barron Fujimoto/Flickr Speaking of food, crawfish boils just deserve their own category, don’t you think? Crawfish boils are a time to get together with friends and family, discuss who has the best boil, and chow down. Is it crawfish season yet?
- Mardi Gras
Wikimedia/public domain It just wouldn’t be New Orleans without Mardi Gras. Even back in the 1930s, the crowds for the Rex parade were incredible.
- Mardi Gras Cups
©Ray Sutherlin Everyone knows the best part of Mardi Gras is the cups. You stock up on them at the parades, then you use them as go cups throughout the year.
