We’re Texans, so of course we feel a great sense of pride about our mighty Lone Star State! Living in the Metroplex earns additional bragging rights because of our strong and lively heritage, exciting personality, and diversity. With all that said, here are 11 things you’ll undeniably find in most locals’ home in Dallas – Fort Worth to showcase our true love of Texas:
- Texas-shaped décor.
Carlos Pacheco/Flickr We love to show our city and state pride here. You’ll undoubtedly see the shape of Texas somewhere in our homes. It could be on a pillow, platter, wall art, or even a novelty item, like a Texas-shaped waffle maker!
Inga Munsinger Cotton/Flickr You might also find the shape of our state embedded into our flagstone patio or on our outdoor decorations!
- Star-power.
Norby Anderson/Flickr We are the “Lone Star State” and there’s nothing quite like a big and bold star to show it! You often can find a star in our home as wall art, on light fixtures, on our doors, or even our dish patterns. Subtle or braggy, we’re bound to have one somewhere!
- Cowboy boots… or hat… or western belt with a big buckle. Maybe all three!
awyatt/Flickr Even if they are only occasionally worn for events like the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo or an occasional boot-scootin’ night out, most locals have at least one of these items in their closet. You never know when you need to show off that Western heritage around here.
- A freezer full of beef.

- A backyard grill.
Reimaging Erica/Flickr Our beautiful, warm weather means there is plenty of outdoor grilling opportunities year-round.
- Sports team attire.
Keith Allison/Flickr Whether it’s total fan love of America’s Team (the Dallas Cowboys) or for our Texas Rangers baseball, Dallas Stars hockey, or Dallas Mavericks basketball, we’re gonna show our loyalty. We’ll have ball caps and jerseys of our favorite teams and players, and love wearing them.
- Dr. Pepper.
Matt Wan/Flickr It was invented in Waco all the way back in the 1880s, so it has been a local favorite for a long time.
- A fishing pole. Perhaps a boat. Definitely a fishing companion.
Patrick Lewis/Flickr Bass fishing is a beloved activity around here, so many of us head to the lakes and enjoy the day or weekend reelin’ in these fellows. We might even have a fishing or ski boat as well. Of course, bringing our four-legged family member is a must too.
- Backyard swimming pool, or at least a hot tub.
Dave Hensley/Flickr Bonus points if either is in the shape of Texas! Many of us have our own private backyard pool here, and they get plenty of use during our extra hot summers.
- Margarita glasses (and a tub of salt for the rims).
Timothy K Hamilton/Flickr Margaritas are king here (the frozen variety was invented in Dallas, after all). Most locals have their own special margarita glasses and container of salt ready for a libation and a good time!
- A bag of tortilla chips and a jar (or three) of salsa.
Amy/Flickr Whether it’s homemade or straight from the store, we live off of chips and salsa here. We stock up for whenever company comes, but we can also devour the entire bag and jar solo.
