Living in the Sunshine State means never having to be bored, ever. There’s always something new to see and do, even if you’ve lived in Florida your entire life. If you feel like you’ve done everything there is to do in our state, check out a few of the little-known attractions we’ve discovered so far this year:
- Visit The Official Florida Flamingo Museum.
Facebook/The Official Florida Flamingo Museum There are lots of interesting museums in Florida, but you’ve probably never heard of this one. This museum in Ocala has the largest collection of flamingo items in the world. It doesn’t get much more Florida than that. Learn more about it here.
- Enroll in clown school (or at least visit).
Flickr/Richard Elzey Lake Placid is a fascinating small town that’s famous for its quirky charm. First of all, it’s known for its many murals. Secondly, it’s the Caladium Capital of the World. Finally, it’s home to a longstanding landmark, Toby’s Clown School. You can read more about Lake Placid here.
- Take a tiki boat tour.
Facebook/PonTiki Boat Cruises This is possibly the most fun you’ll ever have on a boat. These floating tiki bars stop at sandbars, play fun music, and all the drinks are included. Read more about these tiki tours here.
- View some incredible wildlife on this Florida safari.
Flickr/anthony rue Check out bison, alligators, and wild horses up close at Paynes Prairie Preserve near Gainesville. Read our full write-up about this wild state park here.
5.. Try “horseback swimming.”
Facebook/Cypress Breeze Farm- Horseback Riding Adventure On these special excursions, Cyrpess Breeze’s specially trained horses wade into Tampa Bay and swim back to shore. It’s an unforgettable way to experience some of Florida’s most beautiful scenery. Read our post about this special experience here.
- Visit the world’s largest butterfly park.
butterflyworld.com There is nothing more magical than being surrounded by thousands of fluttering butterflies. Butterfly World is truly one of the most amazing places in Florida for nature-lovers. Read more about Butterfly World here.
- Watch planes land at this unique restaurant.
TripAdvisor/Lee R Florida has no shortage of amazing restaurants, but this one is a little different. Highjackers isn’t just full of airplane memorabilia, you can also watch planes take off and land from your table. Learn more about it here.
- Visit America’s only burger museum in Miami.
Yelp/Jorge M. We would’ve expected the country’s only seafood museum to be in Florida, but it was somewhat surprising that America’s first museum focused on burger and fast food history is right here in the Sunshine State. Read more about this charming little museum here.
- Stroll through a European town square without ever leaving Florida.
Facebook/European Village - Palm Coast At European Village in Palm Coast, shops and restaurants occupy the first floor while housing occupies the floors on top, giving the whole community the vibe of a traditional town square. To learn more about the restaurants and farmers market at the European Village, check out this post.
- Visit Mount Rushmore and meet a few former presidents.
TripAdvisor/Rodney M Okay, so it’s a miniature version of the famous landmark, and the presidents are all made of wax, but the Presidents Hall of Fame in Clermont is still one of Florida’s most unique old-school attractions. Read more about this attraction here.
