Those from Missouri and Kansas each have their own set of questions that are constantly asked by new people, but what about Kansas City? We have people on either side of the line living in our city, but there are still stereotypes that people believe apply to us all. For some reason, people are always asking things like these. Some are asked by out-of-state visitors that come to the city, while others are only asked when you leave Missouri. What questions do people always ask you?
- “Is that in Kansas?”
Martin Howard/Flickr No. Just no. Stop asking this, already.
- “Oh. Is that by St. Louis?”
benessere/Flickr What? What makes you think that?
- “So, are there a lot of farms around?”
Stuart Seeger/Flickr You mean, outside of the metro area and the 2 million people that live here? There sure are.
- “Is the barbecue really that different?”
Adam Kuban/Flickr If you’ve never had it before, you’re just going to have to try it. Then answer the question for yourself!
- “Do you like the Chiefs?”
Bob Brents/Flickr They say, as you step out of a bus looking like this. Of course, sometimes we’re asked while we’re wearing Chiefs gear, which I also don’t understand.
- “Have you ever been to a Royals game?”
Dave Herholz/Flickr It’s kind of a “rite of passage” type thing to attend at least one Royals game. Of course, many of us haven’t, but they’re fun even if you’re not crazy about baseball!
- “Why don’t you like World’s of Fun?”
Emily Bell/Flickr Most of the season, it’s filled with a bazillion tourists and long lines. Plus, some of us are burnt out on the same old rides.
- “Do you know Tech N9ne?”
Evan Guest/Flickr If you do know him, that’s great, but we’re betting that’s a pretty small group amid the millions who live in KC. I hear this one a lot from people in Kansas, who seem to think he’s everyone’s neighbor.
- “Is that a real building?”
Tim Samoff/Flickr Yes? It’s a library, and we love the outside just as much as you do.
- “What’s so great about it?”
MRHSfan/Flickr Well… everything! Our local nature parks, our people, and our food. You can’t go wrong in a city with events happening all the time! There’s always something to do and somewhere to enjoy. We love Kansas City the way it is.
Though these questions haven’t changed much over the years, our city has. Check out these vintage photos of what our city used to look like back in the day.
