Contrary to popular belief, many Montana stereotypes simply aren’t accurate. But while it’s true that we’re not all cowboys and cowgirls who drive pickup trucks, that doesn’t mean we can’t spot the imposters pretty quickly. Even if someone claims they were born and raised in Montana, these are some of the ways we’ll be able to tell if that’s not true.

  1. They can’t handle the cold weather.

Mark Holloway / Flickr Montanans may not exactly enjoy the harsh winters, but we’re used to them.

  1. They can’t pronounce Havre, Choteau, Glasgow, etc.

  1. They can’t drive in the snow.

  1. You catch them driving below the speed limit on the highway… in perfect weather conditions.

MortAuPat / Flickr That’s a good indication that they didn’t learn to drive in the Treasure State.

  1. They greet you with three little words: “I’m a vegan.”

Julis 96 / Flickr It’s not that there aren’t ANY vegans in Montana, it’s just that you’re about as likely to meet a unicorn.

  1. They’ve reached middle age without ever having been to Glacier National Park.

Mark Smith / Flickr While it’s true that not every Montanan goes to Glacier, considering it’s our pride and joy, you’d be hard-pressed to find an adult who hasn’t been at least once.

  1. When you bring up the subject of California, they smile excitedly and talk about how warm it must be there.

alisdair / Flickr A true Montanan will show at least a little cynicism.

  1. They don’t know how to change a tire, shovel snow, or they lack basic survival skills.

acearchie / Flickr Being raised in Montana often means growing up without neighbors, so we’re taught to be self-reliant early on.

  1. They tell you they don’t really like to go outside.

anax44 / Flickr We live in the most beautiful state, and we enjoy it to the fullest.

  1. When you pass them on the road, you don’t get the friendly wave.

Wesley Fryer / Flickr This might be the biggest indication of an imposter of all.

There’s no need to lie about being from Montana — as long as you’re friendly and hardworking, we’ll welcome you. Here are a few things you’ll learn rather quickly.
